It is common to remove for cosmetic and health reasons. A dentist has the knowledge and training to perform this procedure and determine whether you are a good candidate. These teeth usually come in by the time you reach your early 20s. Usually, you will have four of these teeth — two on the top and two on the bottom. But you may also have fewer than four. If these teeth have enough room to grow in properly, you will want to pay close attention to good oral hygiene.
More information about wisdom teeth
Also known as the third set of molars, these teeth once served a vital role in chewing. When diets consisted of roots and harder meats, these molars helped to break down food more effectively. Today, diets and cooking methods make food softer, rendering a wisdom tooth nonessential. These teeth often do not have much space to erupt correctly, posing problems to them and other teeth. In these cases, there can be jaw pain and gum pain. There is a bigger risk of developing gum disease and tooth decay as well.
Spend enough time brushing
Even when there is plenty of room for the wisdom teeth to come in, dental health issues can be present. Because these teeth are so far back in the mouth, it can be a challenge to reach them with a toothbrush and toothpaste. People should make a concerted effort to hit these molars and brush long enough. Brushing should occur at least twice a day, especially after meals and before bedtime. The individual should not rush through this activity but make sure to hit both sides of all of these molars. Using fluoride-based toothpaste is most effective.
Commit to flossing
When a person forgets to floss, gum disease becomes much more likely. The habit will remove food particles from in between teeth. This keeps plaque and tartar forming from teeth and at the gumline. Flossing takes dedication and diligence, particularly with hard-to-reach areas such as where the wisdom teeth are. Flossing daily will keep the gums in this area healthy. This will also reduce the risk of suffering tooth loss and bone loss.
Keep seeing the dentist
Visiting the dentist every six months is another good way to maintaining good oral health with wisdom teeth. A dental checkup includes thorough teeth cleaning, including scaping away any plaque and tartar buildup on the wisdom teeth. This appointment gives the dentist a chance to examine the patient and identify any concerns with the third molars. The patient can also ask questions and express any concerns, such as tooth pain and discomfort.
